What does HubSpot's State of Marketing 2026 report tell us about high intent buyers and AI search?

Marketing & Strategic Relationships

AI search is not just another channel. It is reshaping who reaches your website and why. Fewer people are clicking through from search engines, but the ones who do are further along in their decision making, and that changes what your content and your website need to do.
LLM traffic is smaller but sharper
According to HubSpot's State of Marketing 2026 report, nearly half of marketers say web traffic from search has fallen because of AI answers. On its own, that sounds like bad news. The more useful figure sits alongside it: 58% of marketers say AI referral traffic carries much higher intent than traditional search.
Put plainly, visitors arriving from tools like ChatGPT have usually already done their early research. The AI answered their first questions, so by the time they land on your site, they are closer to a decision than someone who typed a keyword into a search bar.
HubSpot's own figures back this up. Leads from LLMs are up 1,850% for the company, and those leads convert three times better than other sources. Traffic volume falling while lead quality rises is the pattern worth paying attention to.
There is a catch. 60% of marketers say sites need to meet these visitors with a purchasing experience as seamless as the LLM that sent them, think chatbots and low friction checkouts, not a homepage that makes them start their research again.
Content now has to work in more places at once
A decade ago, a campaign lived on a small number of channels and you optimised for each one individually. Now the same piece of content might turn up as a direct citation in an AI answer, get summarised into someone else's words, or not appear in an AI response at all.
That unpredictability has sped everything up. 62% of marketers say their campaigns now run in continuous, interactive cycles, updating content on an ongoing basis rather than publishing once and moving on. This is the practical shift behind AIO and GEO: writing content that holds up whether it is read directly by a person, lifted by an AI model, or condensed into a two line answer.
Where marketing is heading
The direction of travel is fairly clear. Marketing is settling into a loop: AI handles speed and efficiency, people bring judgement and creative sense, and each campaign feeds learning into the next one. It is less a straight line from brief to launch and more a cycle that keeps refining itself.
As AI reshapes where and how buyers make decisions, the practical response is to build that loop deliberately, structuring content so it can be found and understood by AI systems, while keeping the experience genuinely useful once a real person arrives.
What this means for your content strategy
- Write for direct answers. Structure content so a clear, well supported answer sits near the top, since that is what AI systems tend to lift.
- Keep facts checkable. Cite sources and figures clearly so AI models can attribute your content with confidence.
- Treat your site as the next step, not the first. Assume visitors from AI search already know the basics, so give them the detail and the easy path to act.
- Review content on a rolling basis. Treat pages as living assets that get updated as AI platforms and their behaviour shift, rather than one off projects.
- AI search has not replaced traditional search, but it has added a second buyer journey that starts somewhere else entirely and arrives at your site with different expectations. Getting that arrival right is quickly becoming as important as getting found in the first place.
How Seed can help
This is exactly the shift we work on with clients day to day. We help brands stay visible in AI Overviews, generative search results and large language model outputs. Digital PR sits at the centre of that work, building the authoritative brand mentions and citations that AI systems rely on when generating answers.
